Okay, so for the past few weeks, I have had to keep a secret, but as of today, I can finally share the good news: I am going to be an Aunt in May as Boy’s brother Nick and his wife Erin are pregnant*!
They told us when we went to their house for Redo Thanksgiving on October 24 and we couldn’t have been more excited, although to be honest, we didn’t catch on right away. Soon after we got there, they forced us into the kitchen area for a game of Scabble. The idea was that they had given us each titles to spell out a secret message that would reveal the happy news to us. As I play Scrabble all the time, you would think this would be easy for me, but no. As the word Aunt is short and you need 7 tiles to play Scrabble, I was completely thrown off and let the extra letters confuse the heck out of me. Even when Boy’s mom started freaking out (her tiles spelled out MuuMuu which is the Finnish name for Grandmother), I didn’t catch on. Tuna? Pain? What the heck is this supposed to mean?
A dramatic re-enactment of our Scrabble board. Although it wasn’t quite this obvious, I really should have cottoned on sooner.
It was only when someone flashed the picture in my face that I finally understood and got excited and started to cry. There was going to be a baby!
A snapshot of my soon to be niece or nephew. I know I am bias, but I think they have the cutest pixels ever!
The news that there would soon be a new edition to the family made me so jazzed I wanted to shout it from the rooftops. However, since my BIL and SIL hadn’t told some people yet (namely Boy’s dad), we had to keep the info to ourselves.
But this weekend, at a big family dinner, they finally shared the news and it was awesome. Not only was everyone very excited, but it made Boy and I feel better about our lack of comprehension since it took my in-laws a little while to understand what was going on too.
Nick’s plan for telling my father-in-law was to slip the ultrasound picture into his day planner. Unfortunately, my father-in-law was so thrown (even with May 15: Be a Grandpa written beside it) that he thought Nick was showing him some sort of doppler radar picture. See, dude, at least I didn’t mistake your kid for a hurricane!
Once the secret was finally out, we got to shower the baby with presents. First, Boy and I gave them the present we had spent the last year hiding in our apartment: a little flight cap!
(Made by the lovely Soil on Etsy)
And then, I pulled out a gift I had bought the day before in preparation for the big reveal: The Robert Munsch Treasury!
(I really love books and I desperately wanted to share my favourites with the new addition.)
I have already bought the baby a Christmas present and have about twelve other gifts on a list but Boy has told me I have to limit myself to a gift every couple of months. Unfortunately, I am so excited, I don’t know if I will be able to resist! There are so many cute things!
Anyway, big cheers for good news! Only 6 months until Smee** arrives! Hooray!
*I have previously referred to Nick and Erin as Logan and Charlotte, but as I wanted to link to Nick’s blog post where their proper names were used, I figured I would switch to make things less confusing.
** Smee comes from a conversation we had on Saturday. When the grandparents began discussing what names they would like to be called by (Grandma, Nan, Gigi etc.) Erin’s dad said that he would like the baby to call him “Captain.” From there, someone brought up Peter Pan and when Nick namechecked Captain Hook’s first mate, it suddenly seemed appropriate that that become the baby’s nickname. We will find out the sex of the baby at the end of December but at least until then (and possibly past), I am calling it Smee!
