Early yesterday afternooon, all the major game outlets broke news from Dice 2009 that Electronic Arts is planning to release a sequel to the 2000 hit Alice.
If you happened to miss it the first time around as I did (Boy opened my eyes to it when we first started dating), the game is based on the old Alice in Wonderland story with a twist. Instead of letting the tale unravel in a colourful Disney way, this version follows as a mentally disturbed Alice battles through her demons in the form of Wonderland characters to regain her sanity.
Considering its children’s story origins, the game is pretty dark, but the plot keeps you intrigued, the art is creepily gothic looking and the soundtrack courtesy of Chris Vrenna (drummer for NIN) definitely creates an amazing atmosphere.
There will most likely end up being over a decade between the two franchise titles by the time the sequel is completed, and some have already expressed doubt about the quality of the finished product (American McGee’s follow up titles were almost all universally panned), but for the moment, I’m staying hopeful.
If it’s done well, with its non-alien invader concept (a rarity in horror games) and its interesting design style (we used its art on one of the tables at our wedding), it could just the kind of hit we’ve been waiting for. Plus, it could lead McGee’s spooky version of Oz to release and that, my friends, would be something to see!
(As a little bonus, I’ve included a picture of the cards from our Alice table. If you want to see the rest of the tables, you can check ’em out here.)
