But I would really like to beat the hell out of some workplace technology right now.
Back in the fall, when my new laptop went on the fritz, my work computer decided to die as well. I was without a terminal for a week and a half, even though people kept giving me work in the meantime.
When I did finally manage to get the thing back, half of the programs I use on a regular basis were either not installed properly or really old versions were installed because the tech guy didn’t know how to put the newer ones on my system. So for the past few months, I haven’t had the ability to open a bunch of documents because I either don’t have the programs or because I have a really outdated version of said program (seriously they have me on an office software thing from 1995).
Anyway, since the first time my computer busted was such an ordeal*, I’ve just tried to make due, but today, I’m freaking sick of it since it took my computer over 10 minutes to boot up and my crappy screen (which has been replaced on three separate occasions) had two seizures where it went all wobbly and I couldn’t see anything.
When I mentioned that my computer was having problems, I was told that it could be sent off again, but that it would no doubt take as long as it did last time. However, if I wanted to bring my home laptop in and work on that I could.
Honestly, I am miffed by this because:
1) The tech guys make at least 3 times what I do so why is it so hard to actually do anything?
2) Why should I bring a computer from home to solve my work’s technology issues?
3) If I bring my computer from home, what motivation do they have to ever fix my work terminal?
Anyway, it seems to be working for the moment, but I am sure that, should the team of mice who I am convinced power this thing wear out or die, I’ll be without a computer forever**.
*In addition to it taking so long to get fixed, I got chastised by my manager who told me to stop bugging him by asking, after a week, what the repair status was.
** The last time I spoke to the tech guy, he said that should my computer be unfixable, he wasn’t sure there was enough money in the tech budget to get me a new terminal, so maybe I should learn to do my job without one. The worst part is, I do not think he was joking.
