I don’t know what it is exactly about British TV that makes me love it so much, but I totally and truly do.
My latest obsession is this show produced by Britain’s E4 channel called Skins. The show is notable, not only because its cast contains the dude from Slumdog Millionaire (Dev Patel) and the little boy from About A Boy (Nicholas Hoult*) all grown up, but because it’s a damn well put together show.
Basically, it follows a group of 8 teens living in Bristol as they live, love and screw up a whole lot. In terms of narrative, each episode centers around 1 of the teens involved which, while they do tackle regular “teen issue” topics, keeps it from feeling repetitive. Plus, the characters are pretty well drawn. No one is intrinsically good or intrinsically bad; they’re just goofy kids trying to figure out how the hell to do this whole growing up thing.
Anyway, as is the way with British shows, there are currently only 2 series (seasons) and 19 episodes of show**, and with it’s balls out swearing, violence, sex and drug use, it’s definitely not for everyone, but from the 8 episodes I’ve seen so far, I’ve really enjoyed it and can only hope, as I continue to watch, unlike certain teen shows I adored back in my youth *coughcoughcoughDawson’sCreekcoughcoughcough*, it doesn’t make me wonder what I ever saw in it in the first place***.
* Dear Nicholas Hoult, You should not be appearing in ads where you show off your treasure trail/abs, because in my mind you are still 12 and singing Roberta Flack songs with your crazy mom, Toni Colette.
**There is a third season planned, but it is being completely recast as the original kids will have gone off to university.
*** I will fully admit that, back in the day, Dawson’s Creek was must see TV for me, but as they hit college and Dawson became more and more of a douchenozzle, I found myself praying for it’s cancellation.
