The other night, Boy and I went out for a late dinner at a pub downtown when we got to talking about music.
Apparently, in high school, both of us did that thing where you tape songs off the radio to avoid buying every CD in existence. I myself ended up having about 18 full tapes worth of stuff before I stopped, but the music quality sucked and, often times, the songs were completely marred by stupid DJs who didn’t know when the hell to shut up (I distinctly remember on my first tape that the beginning of No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs” had some goofball talking about it being “Song Number Seven On Tonight’s Countdown”).
Anyway, we got talking about how songs were like time markers and how really awful ones sounded dated almost immediately and could still inspire disgust years after their creation (I’m looking at you, Lou Bega’s “Mambo Number 5” and Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”). Somehow, during this conversation, Eiffel 65’s “Blue ” came up and I noted how much I hated it because, in my mind, it is barely a step up from that horrible Dancing Hamster song. But when I smiled over at him, he admitted to me that back in the day, he had actually been a fan of it, and the song, along with another bunch of dance music, had made it’s way onto one of his tapes! Which he listened to and enjoyed! On a semi-regular basis!
Readers, I have to say, this new piece of information about my husband shocks me. I mean at this rate, he’ll be wearing gold chains, golf shirts, and a backwards baseball cap and cat-calling me from his lowered Civic in no time! So I’m taking some action. Tonight I am surveying our CDs and if I find any La Bouche, Corona, Ultra Nate, or Bell Biv Devoe in there, I will be forced to savage his music collection*/make fun of him for the rest of his life.
Does your significant other like music you hate? What is it?
* This whole entry is basically an elaborate tease and I would never actually destroy anything because CDs are like sacred objects to me, but I’m still stunned that anyone actually likes Eiffel 65 in any sort of real way.
